Architectural Dichotomy
Farid Rasulov’s Untitled sculptures from the Architectural Dichotomy series, are a sequence of artistic variations based on the rapidly changing architectural skyline of Azerbaijan. Each sculpture comprises concrete slabs and panes of stained glass. The conflicting materials qualities of the concrete and glass are readily apparent: durable and delicate, thick and thin, opaque and transparent. The sculptures are not only reference the locale of the conception, but also capture the state of the modern city in general. Rasulov’s sculptural arrangements build on the idea of an urban site as a living entity, always in process, always in flux, and always in a precarious position amidst a variety of architectural modalities and syntactic relationship.
